Little Hallingbury v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 14 Jul 2007 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 2 wkts

Match report Aspenden won the toss on a clammy overcast afternoon which was to see them reverse the poor performance of the previous week.

Having invited the home side to bat, some poor outcricket, albeit with only ten fielders, helped Hallingbbury to 50-1 in the first 10 overs. However wickets eventually started to fall and with the opposition at 105-5 Aspenden were back in control thanks mainly to some particularly frugal bowling from Strange who shared some quick wickets with Albon. An annoying partnership ensued however and Hallingbury threatened to breach the 200 barrier with ease. However some good bowling in their second spells from the seamers wrapped things up with the hosts being bowled out in the 45th over for 189.

In reply, Aspenden started disastrously losing Strange and Booth cheaply. Williams joined Groom and the ship was briefly steadied before Williams fell for 13. At 30-3 Hallingbury scented an unlikely victory but a decent partnership between Yates (31) and Groom (45) put the away side back in contention. A platform had been set for Sapsford who played the league innings of the season so far. Ably assisted by Baxter (14) and the tail, Sapsford constructed an innings of some maturity playing high quality cricket shots. He timed the run chase to perfection bringing Aspenden home with two balls to spare finishing on an outstanding unbeaten 68.

A good all round performance with important contributions from everyone re-established winning ways for Aspenden. Fielding with only 10 and successfully chasing a decent total under some pressure was particularly creditable.

Champagne moment: The Sapsford innings was high quality from start to finish and deserves special mention however the champagne moment this week goes to the appearance of one member of the opposition in the pub afterwards (an increase of one on the fixture at Aspenden earlier in the season). Congratulations are also due to their injured captain who made the effort to join us for a drink and another club member, who clearly also understand that the social side of the game is integral to the league and the enjoyment of those that play in it.
