Willingale v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 18 Aug 2012 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 5 wickets

Match report The hottest day of the year so far saw ASPCC travel to leaders Willingale. A good track for batting saw Willingale bat first. The familiar opening pair of Edwards and Nash was back, and back with a bang. Edwards making the left handed opener play and miss at most balls he bowled. Nash was doing the same but to the right handed opener this time. With next to no runs being scored the pressure was really on the Willingale batsmen, they responded well with a couple of boundaries, but it wasn't long before Edwards found the edge and Strange took a great slip catch, falling down to his right. Nash and Edwards bowled their 10 overs through, with Edwards picking up a second on the last ball of his spell. Nash 10-1-31-0 & Edwards 10-3-22-2, a great effort from both guys on such a hot day. Green was introduced into the attack, his first time for the ASPS and also in 4 years. His first over went for 22, and the left handed number three just scooped it over the boundary for a few easy sixes. Albon started a spell up the hill, after a expensive first over, Albon struck in his second when the big hitting left hander who was moving the innings along nicely, edged behind for Baxter to get his first of the day. Strange replaced Green, and immediately found his line and length, drawing the batsmen in and out. Strange then picked up his first of four when he bowled the erratic Willingale number 5 who was trying to charge at everything. It wasn't long before Strange got a second when the he got number 6 after two balls, flighting one up beautifuly and Baxter taking the nick behind to put ASPS back on the front foot. Willingales number four looked determined to stay there throughout the innings, which he did well, and was the only one to not go out trying to attack everything. He moved to a good fifty, followed by Strange picking up his third wicket. Albon towards the end of his spell, tossed one up and the batsmen top edged it safely into Baxter's gloves for his third catch of they day and Albon's second wicket. Green came back to bowl four more overs, finding his lines he was getting into his stride and picked up his first ASPS wicket when he got one to sneak through the gate. Albon bowled well with good discipline for his 2-45 off 10. Strange came onto bowl his last 2 overs and picked up one more wicket to give him good figures of 10-0-44-4. Green bowled the last over well and ended 1-46. A great comeback after the first over. Wilingale ended 193-9. A total the ASPS would be confident of chasing down.

The ASPS innings was openend by Groom and new opening partner, the in form Devonshire. With a quicky coming in fast there wasn't a great deal to score off. Devonshire decided the best form of defence was attack. He promptly dismissed the other opener, not letting him get into his rhythm, striking a couple of fours. It wasn't long after that Groom went on the offensive and struck some boundaries of his own. Devonshire then took a ball off middle and hammered it for a absolutely massive six straight down the ground, he then did exactly the same the next ball after the bowler told him he couldn't do it again... With Clifton shouting from the side for Devonshire to stay in and keep your head on, it was Groom who threw his wicket away for 26, when he picked out the deep Mid off fielder who took an easy catch. Edwards was in at 3, looking to continue from his 85 last week. Devonshire was thinking about it now, and playing a good knock. Edwards hit a couple of lovely looking shots before being bowled for 17. A good effort with bat and ball by Edwards in the heat. Strange joined Devonshire and Devonshire hit a nice four to take him to his 2nd league Fifty for the ASPS, unfortunately he could only add another boundary before he was Caught for a extremely valuable 56. A top knock by Devonshire had ASPS well in this game. With two new batsmen, Clifton and Strange, the run rate dropped slightly and Willingale got their tails up. Needing to go at 5 an over, Clifton, trying to do the right thing, went for a big sweep to the vacant fine leg boundary, and was bowled for 16. Baxter joined Strange in the middle and ASPS needed 52 off 10. Strange was middling everything and finding the boundary well. Baxter smashed his first ball for four, and was dropped off what should of been an easy catch for the Willingale skipper. It turned out to be costly when Baxter and Strange put on a good quickfire partnership to take ASPS 7 runs away from victory with 4 overs left. Baxter was Caught at mid on for a good 20 and Strange finished it of next over when he cut a four then edged down to third man for four. Strange finishing with 40*. A great knock and good Partnership between him and Baxter at the end. A great victory for the ASPS to beat top of the league at their ground. Top knock by Rob Devonshire as well.
