Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Woodford Wells 4ths on Sat 04 Aug 2012 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 7 wickets

Match report Aspenden, Standon & Puckeridge were thankful for their covers on Saturday as they beat first heavy lunchtime showers and then visitors Woodford Wells 4ths in their Herts & Essex League Division 3 clash.

Opting to bowl first on a dry wicket and a fast drying outfield, opening pair Colin Edwards and John Albon both extracted early life from the surface, with Edwards gaining sharp bounce and Albon some turn. Early pressure running by the Wells opening pair meant the fielding needed to be sharp and it was. The first wicket wasn’t long in falling as a return catch was offered to Albon who then dismissed Wells No3 first ball with a big turning off break. Edwards was also soon in on the action getting rid of the other opener who looked like he might be set for a big score. With the pressure of good fielding and further wickets falling, Wells had less than 50 on the board after 20 overs with Edwards returning figures of 2-26 and Albon 4-22. There was no respite for the visitors as Ben Sapsford (1-46) and Michael Strange came on, and both made use of all the surface had to offer, Strange in particular turning several square on his way to excellent figures of 3-17, including the third return catch of the day. Runs did come for the batsman but always at a manageable rate and a final score of 112 all out off 39.2 overs never looked even par.

After sampling the vast array of sandwiches laid on my Mr Grace at tea, a good solid start was required when the ASPs went out to bat and the cool heads of Strange and Simon Groom dealt with the early barrage with courage and skill. A good scoring rate was maintained and the constant rotation of the Wells bowlers was easily dealt with. It took a fine piece of fielding to break the partnership with Strange run out for a well made 27. There was no let up when Edwards joined Groom at the wicket and he looked in tremendous form, piercing the field of both front and back foot. Despite the dismissal of Groom for 27 and debutant Nick Green for 2, Edwards (43 not out) and skipper Clifton saw the ASPs home for a 7 wicket win, 215 for 3.
