Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Willingale on Sat 16 Jun 2012 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost by 1 wicket

Match report A breezy day down the Aspenden green saw high flying Willingale visit. After losing the toss, ASPS were elected to bat, knowing it would be a tricky day, Sapsford and Groom were first to the middle. Things looked bad when Sapsford was bowled by a shooter for 0. They looked even worse when Edwards was Ct behind for 3 off a beautiful delivery by Willingale's pass man. Potter followed just a few balls later when he also received a shooter, and Potter was bowled for 2. Clifton joined Groom with the score 9-3. Asps were hoping for a couple of batsmen to settle in and get Aspenden to a decent total. Groom was nudging the ball for singles and pushing it about. Clifton at the other end was trying to keep everything out and build a decent platform for the lower order to work on. Clifton was out Ct for 11, after spending a long time at the crease keeping the Asps in the game, a good job done. The inform R. Devonshire was next in to join Groom. After Groom started to find the gaps and score runs easier, he was Ct for 25 and M. Nash walked in at 7. Devonshire and Nash looked good and Devonshire particularly impressing with a huge six straight back down the hill. Some good batting took the Asps up past the 100 mark. Devonshire hit a couple more boundaries before being bowled for a good 31. Baxter joined Nash for the last couple of overs. Baxter hit a 4 down the ground in the last over and Nash also leaving the Asps 130-6 after 45 overs. Nash ending 29* & Baxter 7*.

A brilliant tea from Suzie was followed by the Willingale run chase. Asps knew that 130 was below par, but on a 'interesting' wicket anything could happen. Edwards started down the hill was rewarded first over with a wicket, bowling Willingale's opener middle stump with a beauty. Nash up the hill was tight and gave the batsmen nothing loose to hit. Edwards was bowling one of his best spells of the season, causing all sorts of trouble for the batsmen. He was rewarded when he cleaned up the other opener aswell, and also should of picked up his 3rd when the batsmen gloved behind and looked like he was going to walk until the umpire said not out. A very dubious decision and a cheating batsmen combined to rile up the Asps side. Edwards finished 10-4-16-2 a terrific spell. Nash was unfortunate not to pick up any wickets but bowled well ending with 10-3-27-0. Potter replaced Edwards and Albon taking over from Nash. Potter bowled with nice pace and accuracy going for 8 runs off 5 overs but couldn’t pick up a wicket. Albon bowled well, making use of the conditions and causing lots of problems. Albon was rewarded when Devonshire took a catch off his bowling and Baxter got a stumping when the 'all mouth' Willingale batsmen almost fell over trying to steam down the wicket. Edwards and Baxter then combined to get a very good run out. The match was very tight and after Surrey came on for only his 2nd league match picked up his second league wicket with some more promising bowling from the Asps young left arm seamer bowling 1-14off 2 overs. Sapsford was Bowling down the hill and putting in a great spell picking himself up a wicket, bowling the Willingale batsmen. With 13 to win for Willingale and 2 wickets to take for Asps, Albon took another taking his tally to 4 for the match. So 1 wicket to win for Aspenden and the Willingale Tail blocked out the rest of Albons over and managed to get them selves 5 to win from 2 overs. Albon was bowling another very good and tight over and could have sealed it when the ball was hit straight back at him, but he just couldn't quite keep it in his hands. Wilingale managed to then hit a boundary and finish the match off with a couple of runs. Albon ending with 4-33 off his 9 overs and Sapsford 1-24 off 7. A fantastic effort from the Asps that just fell short. Great team spirit. Onwards and Upwards for the next match.
