Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Thaxted on Sat 09 Jun 2012 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost by 42 runs

Match report ASPs unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday in disappointing circumstances as they failed to chase down Thaxted’s total on a day dominated by the weather. Heavy rain on Thursday and Friday has made play look unlikely, but after much hard work by the groundstaff Saturday morning and a strong drying wind, a wicket was prepared that was perfectly playable.

Having won the toss, Thaxted slightly surprisingly elected to bat owing mostly to a couple of players assuming the game was to be off not being at the ground on time. ASPs opening bowlers Edwards and Matt Nash started very well gaining movement in the air and off the wicket. Edwards was rewarded early on with a wicket, clean bowling Thaxteds diminutive opener and ending with figures of 1-27 from his 10 overs. The double bowling change at the 20 over point brought Taylor and Surrey into the action but with the remaining opener now in quite good touch, runs began to flow for Thaxted.

After the drinks break, Scot Nash was introduced down the hill and found some good pace with some movement, troubling both batsmen. After Surrey had finished his very good first spell of 4 overs up the hill, skipper for the day Albon brought himself on and was nearly in the action early as a catch was dropped at square leg. Nash and Albon then combined for the next two wickets to fall, firstly Thaxted’s No4 was caught by Albon at mid-on and then the opener, on 70, having just hit Albon over mid-on lifted a catch to Nash who had just been pushed back there. The loss of their main contributor stopped Thaxted in their tracks, and further wickets for Nash (3 for 32), Albon (2 for 20) and a first league wicket for Surrey (1 for 22) meant Thaxted finished 162 for 7 off their allotted 45 overs.

After a very good tea, ASPs openers Taylor and Scot Nash went out to commence the run chase, although the former was back in the pavilion early after getting one that just moved enough. Sadly Edwards (0) soon followed LBW and Potter not long after that for a breezy 10. Scot Nash was still there and was joined by the returning Wisson who battled bravely against some useful bowling on a drying wicket. Sadly wickets continued to fall with Nash (23) and then the unfortunate Wisson (1) run out. This brought together the two debutants, Colin Cheek and David Albon (14) who put on the best stand of the day for the ASPs. Once this partnership was broken however, the tail subsided for a number of single figure scores leaving Cheek stranded 41 not out and the ASPs all out for 120, just short of a second batting point.
