Woodford Wells 4ths v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 02 Jun 2012 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 87 runs

Match report The mighty ASPS travelled to Woodford Wells to face the inform team of Division three. Clifton lost the toss and ASPS were put into bat. After rainfall in the morning, ASPS looked a bit worried about batting first. Nerves were soon to be eased however when Groom & Sapsford opened the ASPS innings in fine style. Sapsford was driving the ball beautifully, rocketing two straight drives just past the bowlers head in the first couple of overs. Groom was just waiting for the bad balls and putting them away emphatically. After Sapsford had scored six fours, he nailed one to square leg who plucked it well, and Sapsford was caught for 26. Groom was joined by Edwards, and after hitting a fantastic drive, Edwards skyed another and was caught at mid off. S. Nash was next in, and with Groomy looking put anything in his slot away, S. Nash had time to play himself in and work out the wicket. Groom slapped consecutive balls over mid wicket off WW 1st change bowler. After reaching a brilliant first 50 of the year, Groom could only add seven more before being caught on the boundary for 57. Strange was now in with S. Nash at the crease, and just as S. Nash was finding the middle of the bat, Bear middled his own shot to mid off and was dropped, the next over Strange played the same shot but no mistake by the WW fielder this time, and Strange going for a duck. Big hitting R. Devonshire was in to join S. Nash, not long after, Nash hit it in the air and WW had another wicket. S. Nash on his way for a good 22. M. Nash joined Devonshire and both looked good. Devonshire excelled his six effort at High Roding by hitting a bigger one straight back over the bowlers head and way into the WW car park. Devonshire was bowled by a yorker after hitting two sixes in his 14. ASPS were looking at only scraping 200 when they were 160-7. But new in Baxter & M. Nash were batting well, Nash picking out the gaps for the boundaries and Baxter pushing the singles about. Nash hit a huge straight six and Baxter clipping a couple of nice looking fours as the partnership grew. After two lovely sweep fours, Nash was bowled for a brilliant 39. Taylor joined Baxter and hit some nice shots of his own, including a lovely punch through cover for four. Baxter hit a couple more fours, before being caught for 31. Albon 3* and Taylor 15* managed some quick singles in the final overs, and after the lower order played their part, ASPS Managed a highly competitive total of 247-9.

After Tea, a confident ASPS side took to the field, and a fired up Edwards was really in the mood to get wicket. Edwards Bowled tight lines, changing his length up and making the batsmen jump around in the crease, he was rewarded in his first over when WW opener edged behind to Baxter. Edwards first league wicket of the season and Baxter's first League catch of the year. Nash bowled with some lovely shape, but the WW batsmen wanted to get after him and got more than lucky when edging Nash 4 times in one over. Edwards carried on his good work picking up a second when he bowled the WW number three everywhere. Nash was replaced by Strange, Nash was very unlucky bowling 5-0-38-0. Edwards then got another wicket in his next over, ct behind again. He found himself on a hattrick when his next ball jumped up on the batsmen, who could do nothing but edge it onto his helmet and straight into M. Nash's hands at slip. Strange was bowling with brilliant control, stopping the batsmen push the ball around and pick up easy runs. After a fantastic spell from Edwards (10-1-39-4) Taylor came on and carried on the good work. Strange picked up his first and well deserved it was too. After the new 'Batsmen' came in, and played and missed at about 5 balls, a few words were exchanged between Baxter, Strange and the 'Batsmen', so you can imagine ASPS delight when Strange bowled him everywhere for a duck in the very next over. Taylor bowled with precision and pace and picked up a wicket in his spell of 10-2-31-1. Albon had replaced Strange at the other end and mopped up the tail with some clever bowling, Groomy taking two catches off Albon as well as puting one down. Albon ended 6.3-23-3, Great stuff from ASPS leading wicket taker. Strange really stifled the WW chase with his spell bowling 8-3-23-2. A great day for the village side, wiping the floor with another team who thought they just had to turn up to win. UP THE ASPS!!
