Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI v Harlow Town on Sun 14 Jun 2009 at 2pm
Match was Drawn

Match report ASPs lost a tight game on Sunday but one in which they played a full part, and in doing so, worried a very confident looking Harlow Town side.
After defeat down at Harlow in the league game Saturday we waited with some trepidation to see how many of our conquerors would turn up. The result was that plenty of them decided the opportunity to force some more misery of the ASPs was a good way to spend a Sunday!!!!
After one of the easiest captains consultations of my stint, both sides got what they wanted with ASPs in the field for what we feared would be 40 overs of chasing leather. It should be said at this point that the attitude throughout our time in the field was first class. The fielders, and more pertinently the bowlers, knew they would come under pressure but chins were held high and commitment to the cause and to each other was shown in abundance.
The opening bursts from Tanky and Wardo set the tone with good accurate bowling and very soon Bambi had some reward by dismissing the Harlow opener with very few on the board. Despite some hard hitting the run rate never got out of hand and regular wickets were picked up. Wardy added 3 more wickets on his way to season best figures of 4-27 with some help from a great catch by Clumpers stumbling backwards at midwicket.
A double bowling change saw Clark and Ben Surrey brought into the firing line just as the lad who had got 99 in the league game looked to free his arms. From one end he targeted the trees and the other the farmers field but to their credit both bowlers stood up to the onslaught incredibly well and aided by some excellent fielding the scoring rate still remained well in check. After young Benny had finished what was an intended first spell (1-31), older Benny was brought on with the express job of getting rid of the dangerous “flake”. This he achieved in great style with the last ball of his first over demolishing the stumps with a speedy yorker. The remaining wickets were cleaned up by BC (1-6) and some reward for good persistence from Clarker. 170 all out from just over 30 overs left ASPs in a very strong position and the belief at tea was we could chase these down and restore some pride.
Sadly the ASPs reply didn’t start in the best way with wickets falling early to good Harlow bowling. Only Alex Cassels (10) of the top four reaching double figures. Harlow thought they were to win this with ease until the partnership of Sappo and Tank came together. Sappo had looked determined from the start of his innings, and had got partnerships going with both Clark and Neil until both fell to short balls that maybe didn’t get up as anticipated. Once the ASPs pair got going, not even the unleashing of Harlows full arsenal could stop them building a wonderful partnership. Tanky doubling his career sixes as a fielder palmed his pull shot over the rope was a highlight but the sense of frustration from Harlow and in particular their young wicketkeeper kept everyone riveted. Sadly the partnership was ended with Tankys dismissal for a season high 29 and Sappo followed soon after for 64 with ASPs still short on the target. Some desperate running and hectic batting from the tail sadly couldn’t push us over the line and when the end of the 40th over came ASPs were just three short on 167 for 9.
