Sandon v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI on Sun 28 Jun 2009 at 2pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost 15 runs

Match report The ASPs Sunday boys were left to rue several missed opportunities as they slumped to a disappointing defeat to Sandon Strollers up at Roe Green. The ASPs side showed several changes to the usual line up with one player making his debut and the return of Steve Lindsay to the fold.

Upon losing the toss, ASPs were invited to take their place in the field which would have been the intention regardless on a very grassy looking surface surrounded by a meadow like outfield. Runs were to be at a premium here and the aerial route looked the only way to reach the boundary.

Tanky started proceedings and almost had a wicket in his first over, the shot-a-ball Sandon opener top edging a pull down towards long leg where it just evaded the circling Lew Fitz and landed over the boundary for six. Thankfully both ASP openers tightened their lines and together with some good fielding, prevented any sort of scoring rate from the Strollers batsmen. Once Lew Fitz had finished his opening burst, skipper Albon was brought into the attack and immediately was despatched through square leg by Simeon for four. In truth he looked the most dangerous of the Stollers batsmen but was bowled out in Albons third over which started a mini collapse. Wickets then fell regularly for Tank (3 for 33) and Albon (3 for 18) before Lew Fitz came back on and should have cleaned Sandon up for a score of about 85. Sadly the usually reliable Si Lindsay dropped two dollies in consecutive balls and these drops allowed the last Sandon pair to add the 30 runs that were to prove decisive. Reece Fitz returned to the attack to clean up the last man aided by a very good catch by Neil Curtis (his third of the innings) and finish with a very respectable 1 for 9 off 4.2 overs. Sandon 113 all out.

After a very good filing of tea, ASPs set about the task of running down the 114 target, Bert and Neil the first men to step up. A couple of boundaries in the first couple of overs gave false confidence to the ASPs team as Neil was cleaned up by Simeon and Steve Lindsay followed shortly after for a highly entertaining 9 that took in the use of at least three bats!!!!! Chris Batchelor on debut looked solid before falling for 6 and suddenly 114 looked a long way off. But Bert was still there and looking good and was joined by Sappo and they proceeded to drag us towards the total. Sadly when both perished in the 20s all eyes turned to Luke to see if he could shepherd us through. Sandon now bowled their best spell of the game and the five consecutive maidens swung the balance towards them for the first time all afternoon. When Albon was run out (without having faced a ball) attempting suicidal second leaving just the Fitzgerald boys the game was up. As hard as Luke tried he just couldn’t find the boundaries needed and the Sandon bowlers needed only a couple of balls at each other young lads to wrap up their victory.

The two sides face up again on July 12th at The Green and we can only hope that on a better track and with a cut outfield our fortunes will be different.
