Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI v Furneaux Pelham on Sun 10 May 2009 at 2pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost 8 wickets

Match report Tired. Didnt sleep. Dropped catch. Report later.

Well where to start with this game. At the halfway point it looked like the ASPs had plenty of runs in the bank and a team sheet full of bowling to be utilised. Two hours later and a lot of cricked necks as we watched Furneaux Pelhams opener Bonner flay us to and over the boundary with some regularity. No ones figures really survived, with the possible exceptions of Lew Robbo (6 overs for 18) who got out before the storm really hit.

Anyway, back to the start of the day and on a bright sunny day, with the ground and wicket looking a picture, skipper Albon won the toss and elected to bat. Lew Robbo and JW were sent up the order to unleash hell but after three wickets, all clean bowled, in the first four overs, a scorecard of 10 for 3 didn’t look too good for an imposing total. However, a rescue act was launched by Clumpers and the very impressive looking Alex Cassels. Combining solid defence, powerful hitting and some fantastic running, the pair got ASPs up and running again. When Alex was finally out for a very well made, and career high 39, the scene was set for Clark to come in and he put some tired bowling to the sword with an impressive 57 not out. The less we say about Lukes dismissal for 98 the better, except to say that it was a great knock from a player who will no doubt get many scores higher than this for the ASPs in the future. The ton however, for now, remains elusive.

After Hayleys bumper tea, hot and cold food on offer, ASPs took the field thinking 228 must be a good enough total. A bright start from Lew and Tanky fooled us into thinking a victory was possible, but it soon became apparent as Bonner launched Tank into the trees in successive balls that he was a man with some power (and a liking for dragging anything legside). A succession of bowling was tried, from different ends, and in different partnerships, but the elusive breakthrough wouldn’t come. In the end both Clark and Albon took wickets, both catches held by Luke, and Benny should have had one as Albon dropped a bit of a sitter, but the end result was clear from a distance out. Mentions should be made of some excellent fielding from JW and Tanky, who seemed a magnet for the ball, and the general feeling was that if we play like that on most Sundays it will be us who emerge victorious more often than not.
