Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won

Match report
A beautiful day saw ASPS play Matching Green at the ACG.

MG won the toss and inserted ASPS to bat. Jabar and Clifton opened. The pitch was wet from the previous night’s storm and played like it. Balls staying low then tennis ball bounce off the next delivery. Jabar nicked early, but straight through keeper and slip for 4. He was then dropped top edging a pull shot to the only fielder in front of square at mid on. Clifton was finding it a bit easier, and with the fine leg boundary un manned, he flicked a few brilliant shots that way for 4. Jabar was playing nice shots, but with the pitch doing all sorts, it felt like there could be a wicket any ball. Clifton got to 44 & a hundred opening partnership with Jabar, before he played on. Ward came in, hammered two 6’s then was out for 15. R. Fitzgerald was in at 4. A bit of shanter from the MG bowler to Jabar after a ball rolled on the floor, resulted in Jabar hitting the next ball over the pavilion with one of the shots of the day. The other shot of the day came from R. Fitz with a back-foot cover drive, a fantastic shot off the MG quicky. Jabar played very sensibly and scored where he could. He shot to 95 before being bowled, a captains knock. Much to the delight of the spectating landlord Pankhurst there was no ton and no jug! An England style collapse was to follow for the ASPS, 9 runs for 6 wickets saw R. Fitz, Green, McNamara, L. Fitzgerald, Curtis & Baxter all fell trying to push the score over 200 in the last few overs. Baxter also given plenty of chat by MG after last years game, all in good spirit… Curtis did smash a 4 in the final over to take ASPS to 200. A score ASPS felt should have been 50 more due to Jabar & Clifton’s great start. None the less it was a good target to bowl at on a pitch that had a lot of life in it!

After a standard Baxter tea (Ham, cheese, ham & cheese) it was MG to chase. A rousing speech from captain Jabar had the ASPS boys fired up and ready. Ward was first up down the hill, off the long run he was firing them down. MG opener was throwing his hands through everything. A couple of nice drives were followed by play and miss after play and miss. Then after clothing one off R. Fitz the other end, the batsmen had some more shanter for the ASPS spinner. It didn’t really matter though, Fitz had him out 2 balls later caught by his brother L. Fitz at midwicket. Some very well thought out captaincy saw Jabar chop and change bowlers & the field constantly. Strange replaced Fitz and bowled the remaining opener. MG’s two best batsmen were now in, and quality batsmen they are too. They batted sensibly and patiently. Bad balls to the lefty were hammered to the boundary with ease. They had put 40 on and got MG to drinks 75-2. A solid position. Albon was into the attack now, the lefty charged Albon and smashed it low and hard to Baxter at Long on who took a good catch on the rope to give ASPS a massive breakthrough. Number 5 came and went after nicking behind to Curtis off Ward. Next over Albon had another caught by Jabar. MG gone from 75-2 to 84-5 in just a few overs. A small partnership was building but L. Fitz bowled and Baxter took his second good catch of the day at point. ASPS catching and ground fielding had been impeccable for most the innings. Then came the moment of the match, Strange at gully took a one-handed blinder! Simply LoveLeh. L. Fitz caught the MG’s Number 3, who batted very well on a tough pitch, off R. Fitz for the second time in the innings. MG batted the final 5 overs but needing to go at 12 an over it looked unlikely with 1 wicket in hand. Strange bowled a maiden in there and R. Fitz finished it off leaving MG 154 A/O. ASPCC with a good 46 run win thanks to some brilliant fielding by every single Asps player & bowling by all 5 bowlers –
Ward 2-26. R. Fitz 3-27. Strange-29. Albon 2-35. L. Fitz 1-32

ASPCC now have now won 4 lost 1 this season and sit nicely in 3rd. A great start under new skipper Jabar.
