Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 8 runs

Match report Match Report – Sat 19th May Vs Epping Foresters

A fantastic, competitive game played on Saturday.

Aspenden were put into bat first and Clifton joined Jabar opening. Clifton was bowled for 2 in the 2nd over by one that stayed slightly low. Ward strode out, not knowing the carnage he was going to cause! Jabar fell soon after for 14 and was soon followed by both Fitzgerald lads. With ASPS struggling, Moor being run out for a duck on his return made for terrible reading for Aspenden. Ward the other end was watching the collapse, but also batting through it. Typically aggressive, Ward struck some delightful 4’ & 6’s. McNamara fell for 0 and Devonshire was next in at 8 with ASPS sitting precariously on 100-6. Devonshire was clever and played himself in, passing the strike to Ward who had just reached his fifty. Ward & Devonshire were sensible and started getting ASPS towards a competitive total of 180-200…. Ward had other ideas.. Absolutely clubbing the ball to all parts. Crunching dives, beautiful hook & pull shots and enormous 6’s saw him reach his first league 100 for Aspenden. It wasn’t without chances, Epping dropping 2 very difficult catches and 1 not so difficult. Devonshire started to swing the levers and joined in with the hitting, clubbing boundaries through cover and over midwicket. Ward going strong the other end decided with 5 overs left it was time to go big… Asps sitting on 220 with 5 to go. Ward struck 5 consecutive 6’s in one over! Taking him to 150 in the process. Devonshire played a brilliant innings and deserved his second 50 of the season but sadly fell for 42 going for the big heave. Ward carried on his heroics for another couple of overs until he was bowled by a Yorker. Ward hitting ASPS 2nd highest individual score ever of 175! A phenomenal effort and Innings from the young big hitting lefty, it included SEVENTEEN 6’s. The innings was ended by Albon & Surrey who scampered some important quick singles at the end. Asps end 297-7.

A good tea from Surrey was followed by a confident ASPS side take the field. The first over set the tone for the Epping chase. First ball of the innings saw the opener dropped! He then scored 18 off the next 5 balls! Epping clearly going hard from the start. Ward continued his brilliant day by picking up an early wicket. Surrey was struggling with line and length was being punished by the Epping batsmen. He was rewarded with a wicket but his 5 overs had gone for 55. Ward picked up a second and was then replaced by Devonshire, who was the pick of the bowlers out of both teams. Albon replaced Surrey and not much changed. Epping batters were getting onto one knee and swinging to the trees. Devonshire picked up two quick wickets and although Epping were going at 6-7 an over they were 4 wickets down. R. Fitzgerald replaced Albon and picked one up aswell. Devonshire finished off with another aswell. Epping sitting on 130-6 at drinks. It was far from over though! Epping’s skipper & number 7 started hitting to all parts, including some more massive 6’s. He was soon to 50. R. Fitz picked up a second and finished well with 9-0-42-2, good figures on the day. Devonshire removed another before finished with 3 for 35 off his 9. Spell of the day. With the skipper still going big and now the ‘tail’ wagging, the game was still well in the balance. Epping needing about 80 off the last 10. The Skipper kept hitting quick runs until he was removed! Epping carried on the onslaught. Leaving them needing 13 off the last over! L. Fitzgerald bowled it, and after the first ball went for 4, it was squeaky bum time. L. Fitz prevailed though! Taking the final 2 wickets in two balls! A fantastic game, which saw 19 wickets and nearly 600 runs! A brilliant chase from Epping wasn’t quite enough & Asps come out on top by 8 runs.
Special mention to Kal Ward’s 175, second highest individual score ever for an ASPS player. Also his bowling and Devonshire for his bowling and putting on 150 with Kal with the bat.

Asps travel to Ilford 1’s this Saturday, looking to make it 4 wins out of 4 under new skipper Jabar.
