Nazeing Common I v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 17 Jun 2017 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost by 119 runs

Match report Aspenden travelled to the idealic Nazeing CC on Saturday. The ground beaming in sunshine, perfect for a game of cricket.
ASPCC were elected to field first and in the searing heat L. Fitzgerald steamed down the hill with Surrey coming up the. Both bowlers took a couple of overs to get into their stride and find their areas. Surrey going close with a nick that fell short of Baxter. The Nazeing openers were going well and looked comfortable on a batsmen friendly wicket. Ward was introduced into the attack along with Albon. Ward bowled consistent lengths and came close to the breakthrough on several occasions. Albon bowled well, but on a friendly wicket and quick outfield, the openers scored well. Strange replaced Albon and R. Fitzgerald replaced Ward. Strange was the man who got the breakthrough and sadly bought out the big hitting number 3. Strange had a second and Nazeing now had two big clean hitters at the crease. Fitz took some early punishment, anything too full or too short was walloped over midwicket into the corn field. Fitz finally got his man but the damage was done. Nazeing 200 for 3 with 15 overs left. It looked a daunting prospect for the Asps men on an extremely hot day. Fitz picked up a well-deserved 2nd wicket in his spell of 10-0-59-2. L. Fitzgerald came back for 3 overs but was dispatched into the field as was Albon on his return. Not through bad bowling just very good batting. Strange returned to take his third when the batsmen came down the wicket and a big nick was quickly snatched by Baxter. A nice way to finish but a big chase of 298 had been set.

After half an hour of rehydration, Clifton and Jabar opened up for the Asps. Nazeing playing safe and sticking men out for Jabar hampered the Asps run rate. Beautiful shots were getting one and quick fielding was stopping the twos. Clifton nicked off to the young quicky and Kallum at 3 slammed one to cover who took a solid catch. R. Fitzgerald joined Jabar who was scoring all around the wicket and finding the gaps, and both men looked good. Fitz finding the fielder a bit too often and a tight two ended in disaster when Fitz was run out. Jabar had raised his bat in the same over for a quality 50. Baxter was in with Jabar and attempted to take the attack to the Nazeing bowlers, clubbing a couple of 4’s through midwicket finding the gap nicely. Jabar had injured his knee and was now struggling, after trying to hit out or get out Jabar was forced to retire hurt for 68. Groom joined Baxter who now looked comfortable at the crease, Sadly groom did not las long when a leading edge was plucked by mid-on. L. Fitz was next and after drilling a brilliant straight 4 first ball was also caught for 6. Things were falling apart when Albon joined Baxter and the pair started to looked good. Albon was leaving the ball well and hitting the ones in his ark. The shot of the day came when Albon shimmied down the wicket to crunch the left armer over cover for 4. Baxter joined the fun and hit the bowler for 3 fours in an over followed by a 4 & 6 next over. With 150 need off 10 Baxter hauled out to long off for a well-made 46. Surrey came and went first ball and Ward provided a partner for Albon who hit 6 fours on his way to a league high 32 before he was ct behind. Strange carried his bat for 7* as the Aps ended 179 A/O. Unfortunately, a step too far for the Aspenden boys. But a good day against a good oppo and bunch of lads.

Special mention to Strange’s bowling who kept it tight and Fitz who was unfortunate not to get a couple more and go for as many as he did. Also, Albon for a career high 32 and Baxter who put on some resistance with Albon & a classy 68* for Jabar.

Next week see’s the a T20 on Thursday (3pm) against the Dutch as part of tour. Tour cup game Friday (2pm) & a visit from 3 Caps in the league Saturday.
