Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Ilford Catholics on Sat 27 May 2017 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 3 wickets

Match report ASPCC partied late into the night after a fantastic victory against joint top Ilford Catholics.

Asps welcomed Ilford to the ACG for what would turn into a great game of cricket.

Clifton lost the toss and Ilford elected to bat first. L. Fitzgerald opened up down the hill and Surrey up. Surrey struggled with line early on and the top opening batsmen punished him. A couple of lovely straight drives followed by some nice flicks off his legs. It was Fitz who got the breakthrough, getting a nick behind to Baxter who took a good low catch. Surrey was replaced by Albon who immediately caused problems for the batsmen. Fitz was rewarded when the quality Ilford bat miscued a slower one high in the air to Devonshire at mid off who plucked it out the sky. A great breakthrough. Asps were on top now and Albon picked up an early one to make it look even better. Devonshire was down the hill now and bowling with real pace and venom. Albon got another LBW and Devonshire had the new bat trapped LBW for 0. ALbon finished up with a great ct and bowled, leaving him with top figures of 10-2-31-3. Strange replaced Albon and also picked up and LBW. Ilford reeling on 90-7 now. BUT Asps were to be mistaken if they thought that was it done and dusted. Ilford put on a good partnership taking them to the 150 mark. Strange got breakthrough and Devonshire his second, giving Devonshire 2-16, a great bowling effort. L. Fitzgerald and Surrey both bowled the death overs down the hill but Ilfords number 9 & 10 looked good and scored some valuable runs. Number 11 was in after Fitz got number 10. Number 11 hit a drive over point for 6, Ilford finishing on 204-9.

The normal opening pair of Clifton and Jabar strode in after teas. Jabar was dropped twice by the same man early on and was struggling to get himself in, Clifton looked solid and played a beautiful cover drive for 4 early on. Ilford opened with a spinner and he was constantly on the spot. Giving neither batsmen anything to hit. Jabar was looking more like his normal self after cutting and pulling some lovely shots. Clifton who looked good was triggered when he was adjudged to have hit one down leg side to the keeper, it didn't look or sound like he got any bat near it. An unhappy Clifton had to walk though. Ward came in at 3 and hit a humongous 6 about 80 meters back, if not further. He looked good but one big shot to many was his downfall when he hauled out to long on for 24. A good innings from Ward, a shame it didn't last another 10 overs. Jabar was well into his work now, playing some cracking drives and late cuts through point to reach another 50. R. Fitzgerald was cleaned up by a good ball for 1 and L. Fitzgerald replaced him. Fitz survived 3 early LBW shouts before finding his feet. Jabar was limited singles and the occasional well run two when Ilford stuck the field out for him and up to everyone else. A good ploy by the Ilford skipper, putting the pressure on the new bat. Fitz was up to the challange and creamed a couple of fours on his way to 24 before he was out LBW. Devonshire was in at 6 for his first knock of the year and Jabar just needed someone to stay with him. Sadly Devonshires eyes lit up when Ilford brought the field in and Devoshire tried to take advantage but was cleaned up for 3. Green didn't fair much better when he was given LBW for 0. Baxter joined Jabar and after edging an early 4 looked solid. Jabar and Baxter scored some quick singles and some 2's, pushing Asps along nicely. Baxter managed to find the boundary 4 times before clipping one striaght into the hands on short mid wicket. Jabar welcomed the experience of Strange at 9 and it was experience that shone through. Jabar somehow managed to find the point boundary twice in one over with amazing precision. It was left to Strange to club the ball over mid on for 4 to take Asps to a well deserved victory. Jabar finishing on 92* and Strange 15*. A great team effort from the Asps boys.

Special mention to another Jabar masterclass and the bowling of L. Fitz, Devonshire and Albon.
