Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI v Thorley on Sun 30 Apr 2017 at 2.00pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won

Match report Firstly all our thoughts and prayers are with the match ball, which sadly took an almighty hit off Clifton’s chin. The ball is said to still be in shock but recovering in hospital now…

A late fixture change saw ASPCC welcome Thorley CC to the green, and for a second week in a row it was the Asps who were to set a target. Skipper Albon looked to take the game away early by sending Ward and Jabar out to open. They did not disappoint… The tone was set when Jabar pulled a head height bouncer first ball for a thunderous 4. Ward had left Birchanger the day before and headed straight to the ACG with his bat by the looks of it. Ward crashed two early 6’s off the pacey openers and Jabar joined in with a glorious straight 6 over mid off. After 10 overs Asps were into the 70’s and steaming along. Ward drove 2 more cracking 4’s before being slicing one in the air for the keeper to make a top running diving catch to dismiss him for 42. The opening Thorley bowlers were off and the slow change bowlers were on. Khan joined Jabar and carried on the run fest. He sliced two 4’s in his first over through point. Jabar was looking classy the other end, punching through the gaps and latching on to anything that was slightly off line. Khan hit 3 more 4’s on his way to a well made 26 before being caught. The first debutant of the day Houghton was in at 4 and looked good after a nervous start. Houghton stayed with Jabar for a good 5-6 overs. Sadly after some solid looking shots Houghton was caught. The ever late Clifton was raring to go in his new number 5 position. Jabar bought up his 50 soon after with a great cut shot. Clifton had intent from the start and Jabar was playing beautifully. Jabar was stumped for 70 when he came down to one that stayed a bit low and was sharply taken by the Thorley keeper. The day’s second debutant Gurney was next in and looked to play shots from the get go. He cover drove a great 4, piercing the gap perfectly. Gurney could only add 2 more before he was caught as well. Asps were on the charge though and had hit 200 with 5 overs to go. Albon was just looking to pass the strike to Clifton who was striking the ball hard. Albon done his job before he was caught at slip from a thin edge. Grace came in, hit a 4 and then was bowled after pivoting and falling, only to watch the ball knock the bails off in slow mo, much to everyone’s amusement. Baxter joined Clifton in the last over, Baxter passed the strike to Clifton who couldn’t quite find the boundaries to bring up another 50. Baxter 5* & Clifton 40* helped Asps reach a big total of 240 thanks to some big hitting from Clifton, Jabar & Ward.

A top effort from Gracey with the teas left the Asps fielders moving slowly round the field! Albon and Ward were the usual opening pair. Ward bowled with brilliant accuracy and looked like taking a wicket every other ball. He did remove the opener early on, bowling his middle stump. Albon bagged one soon after and then a second after a very quick piece of glove work from Curtis behind the wicket to stump number 4. Thorley were left looking down and out at 40-4 when Ward picked up his second. Both bowlers giving nothing away and Ward looking very threatening throughout his 8 overs. Albon picked up 2-30 off 8, nice to see the Sunday skipper back in the wickets. Ward had bowled a brilliant spell of 2-15 off 8 with 3 maidens. Golden Arm Grace was next up the hill and Baxter down. The golden arm struck early when Grace bowled number 6’s off peg. Baxter was bowling tightly to the remaining opener who was going along nicely, playing some top looking shots. Grace soon napped another bowled and was bowling tightly throughout. Baxter was rewarded when he bowled the Thorley batsmen round his legs. With Thorley 8 down Gurney replaced Baxter (1-31) and Khan replaced Grace (2-30). Khan picked one up in his first over, bowling the number 9 bat. Gurney leaked a few runs early on but finished it off when he picked up the Thorley opener Caught and Bowled for 93. A top knock from the opener. Asps with a quality 81 run victory. A good game played against good oppo followed by a few at the local beer festival. A good end to a good weekend for the Asps.

Special mention for Ward’s spell of bowling, Jabar’s 70 and to the debutants Houghton and Gurney. Gurney with his first Asps wicket & top fielding throughout from Houghton.
