Match report On a sunny but chilly day ASP embarked on their first ever season in Division 1 with a long trip to Ilford Catholics. A very damp and lush outfield greeted us, and a quick look at the pitch gave one or two of our players palpitations as it was very green and patchy. However, ASP were inserted and had to make the best of it. Jabar and Clifton started scratchily, with the ball darting around off the seam and the pitch giving some very variable bounce. Both players started to find their feet however, and whilst the scoring rate wasn't rapid, ASP started to get a foothold in the match. However the next 6 or 7 overs saw a bizarre and frankly bewildering collapse from 54-1 to 60 all out!! Clifton was first to go, chipping a catch back to the bowler, which bought a rusty Humphrey to the crease, but with the introduction of a legspinner from one end, both he and Ward were stumped, leaving ASP on 56-3. The big wicket was Jabar and he got a shocker, the ball being pitched halfway down and not getting above ankle height as it hit him in front of all three. Sapsford went for a golden duck, Fitzgerald lasted 2 balls, Devonshire a few more before nicking to the keeper. Strange should have been stumped first ball, but gifted his wicket next ball anyway, and Surrey was cleaned up 4th ball to complete a quite astonishing collapse!! We turned straight round and came out, and Fitzgerald gave us a lift by trapping the opener LBW 3rd ball, but with the other opener of the opinion that there was a ball with your name on it out there somewhere, and trying to clatter everything to the boundary, the game started to run away from ASP. Fitzgerald did have the bonus of bowling the number 3 with a carbon copy of Jabar's dismissal, but the game was soon up! A weird introduction into Div 1 life, their bowling wasn't anything special, and neither was the pitch, so we shouldn't be too disheartened by it, just one of those things!! Onwards and upwards!!
