Match report Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge’s National Village Cup run came to a rather damp end on Sunday with a 7 wicket defeat to a strong Wheathampstead side. After being asked to bat first on a damp looking wicket, the ASPs were soon in a spot of trouble against some useful bowling. A breezy knock of 11 from Devonshire was the only contribution of note from the top order before Baxter (10) came in and looked steady in partnerships with first Groom and then Strange. It took a last wicket partnership of over 40 from Albon (19) and Strange (28 not out) to push the ASPs past the hundred and a target that may at least test Wheathampsteads nerves. Good early bowling from Albon and Ward restricted the scoring for a while but as the opening partnership grew, skipper Albon turned to Edwards and Pankhurst to seek a breakthrough. Almost immediately one of the openers retired ill leaving Edwards (1-19) to clean up the number 3 without scoring and, although Pankhurst also took a wicket (1-27), Wheathampstead reached their target of 108 in the 25th over.
