Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI v North Enfield on Sun 12 Aug 2012 at 2pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 71 runs

Match report A beautiful day in Aspenden saw Asps take on North Enfield, in which is always a enjoyable and entertaining fixture. Asps Lost the toss for the second time in the weekend, and again were elected to bat. Devonshire and Clifton were again the opening Sunday pair. Devonshire started off safely, watching the ball carefully. Clifton the same, but put a couple of nice shots away for four early on. Devonshire smashed one over mid on for four and then again through cover. He didn't last much longer when he went for the big shot down the ground and was just a bit too early, getting bowled for his second 20 of the weekend. Baxter was in at 3 and joined Clifton. Clifton was seeing out the quicker bowler, and Baxter smashed the slower bowler for two fours in his first over. Clifton then got his chance against the slower bowler, also dispatching him. Baxter, not wanting to get bogged down by the quicker bowler hit him back over his head for a nice looking four. A good partnership was growing. Baxter smashed a couple more fours before he Was Ct off a thick edge to point for 41, two weeks in a row for Baxter falling in the 40's. Strange joined Clifton at the crease, who was going along nicely and soon at his second fifty of the weekend. Unfortunately Strange was Ct for just 6. Phipps was in next and was intent on just giving Clifton the strike. Clifton obliged and started smashing the bowling to all parts. With five overs to go Clifton reached a fantastic 100*. A top knock by the league skipper and his second ASPS ton. He retired on 100* to give Grace a bat who had been in his pads for the last 20 overs. Unfortunately Clifton hadn't even sat down before Grace was walking back after dragging onto his stumps first ball. Nash and Phipps hit out the last couple of overs, Nash finishing on 15* and Phipps 13, would of been a not out if Nash hadn't of run him out last ball... Asps ending on a highly competitive 207-6. Congrats to Clifton for a great hundred.

After a Baxter tea of plain ham or cheese sandwiches, the Asps were ready to go in the field. Early breakthrough's from Nash, who picked up two, and Ward who picked up one on the first 10 overs. Put Asps in a great position. Reece Fitzgerald replace Nash (5-2-17-2) to bowl his mystery spin. Ward grabbed a second to really put NE under pressure. Ward finished a top spell of 8-1-37-2. Surrey replaced him and like the week before got immediate success, bowling the NE batsmen middle stump. Fitzgerald was beating the bat a couple of times and over and was rewarded when he bowled the batsman. Surrey then picked up another with a shot ball being skied and caught. And another soon after in similar fashion. Fitzgerald finished 5-0-24-1 a good spell from the young spinner. Surrey also finished with 6-0-25-3, turning into a strong part of Asps Sunday team, picking up wickets every week now. Albon & Grace were on to try and finish the match off. And thats what they did, Albon picking up the last 2 wickets leaving him 2-24 off 6 overs. Grace (2-0-3-0) bowled well and probably deserved one of those wickets. A double winning weekend for the Asps boys, and back to winning ways on Sundays.

And below is the report from the NE website........

Sunday 12th August
Sunday Club XI v Aspenden, Standon & Puckeridge

Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge 207 - 5 (40.0) P.White 2 / 20

North Enfield 135 - 10 (31.4) J.Moxham 34, P.White 32, C.McKenna 22, C.White 14

Not a bad game in many respects. Both batting and bowling from a North Enfield perspective got off to rotten starts with Mally unable to land the ball in the same half of the track more than once an over, Ken similarly afflicted. Moxy bowled an excellent spell, unlucky not to take a wicket as was Del. Peter W came on and tightened the run rate up, and picked up two wickets. Charlie eventually picked up a wicket at the end. 200 on a ground with short boundaries was not too bad. The opener for ASP retired after hitting 100, a very decent gesture and a really well played knock. Cheers Luke!

Tea was taken, and Ken made a school boy error of allowing his plate to slide off his knee, spilling some savoury pork snack items onto the floor.

The batting did not start well at all, at one stage 13 for 3 was shown on the scoreboard. Resistance in the shape of Peter and Moxy, who put on a 50 partnership took the score up to a more reasonable 70 odd. A couple of wickets tumbled, Mally playing a particularly appalling shot to square leg. Ken came in and entertained everyone with some good biffing, hitting the only 6 of the match. Charlie hit a lovely straight 4, which the fielder Wardy attempted to stop but only succeeded in diving into a patch of stinging nettles. The ASP skipper Albon grew a little frustrated with the 10th wicket partnership of Charlie and Ralph as they stuck around and played a few shots - much to his own team's amusement. Another nice afternoon's cricket in the Herts countryside - exactly what Sunday cricket should be about.
